How to Sell Firearms Safely in Utah
A simple, responsible guide to listing your firearm, meeting buyers safely, and staying within the law — while protecting yourself and your reputation.

Selling a firearm in Utah is simple and perfectly legal when done responsibly. This guide explains how to list your firearm, meet buyers safely, and stay within the law — all while protecting yourself and your reputation.
1. Know the Law Before You Sell
Utah allows private firearm sales between individuals without going through a dealer, as long as both parties are legally allowed to own a gun. That means:
- You must not sell to anyone under 21 for handguns or anyone you suspect is prohibited from owning a firearm.
- You cannot ship a firearm across state lines unless it goes through a Federal Firearms License holder (FFL).
- Certain items, like suppressors or short-barreled rifles, require federal paperwork and cannot be transferred privately.
If you’re unsure whether your gun is legal to sell, check the Utah Department of Public Safety or contact a local FFL.
2. Create a Strong Listing
A clear, detailed listing helps you find serious buyers and keeps transactions smooth. Include:
- Accurate firearm details (make, model, caliber, condition)
- Good photos from multiple angles
- Asking price
- Your general location (city or county)
- Any included accessories like magazines or cases
Avoid posting serial numbers or personal information publicly. When you are ready, create an account and post your listing.
3. Communicate Safely
Communicate by phone or SMS. Utah Gun Hub listings use phone numbers for direct contact—verify the buyer with a quick call or text and proceed only if everything feels legitimate.
Look out for warning signs like:
- Out-of-state phone numbers
- Requests to ship firearms
- Unusual payment methods or overpayment offers
Trust your instincts. If something feels off, move on to another buyer.
4. Verify the Buyer
Both parties are responsible for confirming eligibility. Always:
- Check a government-issued photo ID to confirm Utah residency and age.
- Do not sell if the buyer appears underage, intoxicated, or evasive about their identity.
- For added safety, you can ask to see a Utah concealed carry permit or use a bill of sale. We provide a printable template here: Bill of Sale. You can also upload your permit to earn a verified badge: Concealed Carry Verification.
5. Meet in a Safe Public Place
Choose a visible, well-lit location like:
- A police station parking lot
- A busy retail parking lot
- A shooting range with staff present
Bring only the firearm and essentials. Never meet alone at night or in a secluded area.
6. Complete the Exchange
When you meet:
- Inspect the firearm together.
- Exchange payment in cash only.
- Hand over the gun only after payment is complete.
For your records, fill out a simple bill of sale noting:
- Both parties’ names and signatures
- Date and location
- Firearm make, model, and serial number
Keep a copy for yourself in case questions arise later.
7. After the Sale
Once the exchange is complete, the buyer is responsible for the firearm. There’s no official transfer form required for private sales in Utah, but keeping records helps protect you. If needed, you can remove your listing from My Listings.
